New "House of Minorities" in Burgenland / Gradišće

A general planning working group of the companies Goebl Architecture ZT GmbH (Vienna/Krems/Güttenbach-Pinkovac), Miyako Nairz Architects (MNA ZT KG) (Vienna) and Bau & Architektur GmbH (Wolfau) will be responsible for the conversion, which will come from the Europe-wide bidding process for the conversion has emerged as the best bidder.


This was announced by Governor Hans Peter Doskozil, Gerald Goger, Managing Director of Landesimmobilien Burgenland GmbH (LIB), and architect Manfred Gräber from MNA on Tuesday - in the presence of representatives of the ethnic groups of Burgenland-Croats, Burgenland-Hungary and Burgenland-Roma as well as the municipality Oberwart.

Joži Buranits, Deputy Chairman of the Croatian Cultural Association/Hrvatsko kulturno društvo (HKD) is satisfied with the concept. According to Buranits, it corresponds to the ideas of the ethnic groups. Each ethnic group will have its own premises and, in addition, the 450 square meter event hall for common use.

A third for the House of Minorities


Landesimmobilien Burgenland GmbH has acquired the building at Schulgasse 31 (opposite the hospital) from the city of Oberwart. A total of 18.3 million euros net are to be invested in renovation and conversion. The project is also financed with two million euros from the anniversary gift that Burgenland received from the Republic of Austria in 2021.

The total floor space is 5,540 square meters. About a third of this will be used by the three autochthonous ethnic groups in Burgenland. A little less than two-thirds of the area is operated by Gästehäuser Burgenland GmbH. The federal government rents a small part as accommodation for students of the adjacent BAfEP - Federal Educational Institute for Elementary Education.

Common event hall


In addition to the publicly accessible multifunctional center with a large event hall, seminar rooms, offices, café and library for the ethnic groups of Burgenland-Croats, Burgenland-Hungary and Burgenland-Roma, an accommodation facility with 40 rooms will be built. Like the event hall, this is operated by the Landesholding subsidiary Gästehäuser Burgenland.

The gastronomy is managed by the kitchen Burgenland, also a subsidiary of the state holding. In addition, the LIB will build twenty residential units, each with an area of 40 square meters. A fitness center is planned above it, and a playground outside.
