Austria: Bernard Sadovnik to Run Again for Mayor of Globasnitz/Globasnica in 2027
06.05.2026
The Enotna Lista (EL) (English: Unity List) in the South Carinthian municipality of Globasnitz/Globasnica has unanimously nominated Bernard Sadovnik as its lead candidate and candidate for mayor in the 2027 local elections. The party announced the decision following a faction meeting.
Globasnitz/Globasnica is located in the bilingual area of Carinthia in Austria and forms part of the settlement area of the Slovenian minority. Bernard Sadovnik has for many years been regarded as one of the best-known representatives of the Carinthian Slovenes.
Sadovnik has been a member of the municipal council for 35 years and has served as mayor of the municipality since 2015. One of the main reasons for his decision to run again was reportedly his wish to successfully complete an ongoing flood protection project.
At the same time, Sadovnik stressed that improving the quality of life for all citizens remains at the centre of his work. “We mayors are servants of the citizens, and we are grateful that we can help and support our citizens,” Sadovnik stated.
In his statement, Sadovnik also highlighted the important role of local associations, the municipality’s rich historical and cultural heritage, and its living bilingualism. According to him, these place Globasnitz/Globasnica at the heart of the cross-border region and offer significant potential for the municipality’s further sustainable development.
Bernard Sadovnik is also Chairman of the Community of Carinthian Slovenes (SKS), a member organisation of the AGSM within FUEN.
