Slovenian Minority in Italy met with President Pahor in Ljubljana

The meeting was attended by Ksenija Dobrila, President of the Association of Slovenian Culture and Economy, Walter Bandelj, President of the Confederation of Slovene Organisations (member of the AGSM), Senator Tatjana Rojc and Marko Jarc, Chairman of the Joint Committee for Slovenian Minority Issues. The Minister for Slovenes Abroad, Helena Jaklitsch, and the Slovenian Ambassador in Rome, Tomaž Kunstelj, also took part in the conversation, the President's Office announced.

The meeting recalled the signing of the memorandum on the return of the "Narodni dom" in Trieste to the Slovene ethnic community in Italy, which was also attended by Pahor and his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella last July. This historic event was the result of the joint efforts of the Slovene national community in Italy, Slovene foreign policy and the high personal commitment of the two presidents, Pahor's office said.

At today's meeting, the representatives of the Slovene minority said that these efforts and all the events of 13 July last year, including the joint visit of the Presidents to the memorial in Bazovica, had had an extremely positive impact on the atmosphere and relations between the majority population and the Slovene ethnic group in Italy. President Pahor was informed about the state of affairs regarding the return of the National House to the Slovene community.

He was also informed about the efforts to ensure adequate political representation of the minority at national level. They want to ensure that the changes to the electoral law that will be adopted in Italy will not lead to a reduction in their political representation. Pahor expressed his full support for these efforts, his office said.
