Geographically, the autonomous region of Vojvodina in northern Serbia is characterised by the course of the Danube, the Fruška Gora mountains and the oldest national park of the same name. Culturally, it has always been characterised by diversity: in addition to Serbs, Hungarians, Slovaks, Romanians, Bulgarians and other ethnic groups, 2.4 percent Croats and Šokci Croats (Shokats) live here, as well as some Bunjevci Croats (Bunjevats). Croatian is one of the six official languages of the province and the provincial parliament publishes periodicals in Croatian and the other official languages. The Croatian minority has been officially recognised since 2002. The regional centre of the Croatian minority is located in the city of Subotica, the second largest city in Vojvodina. The ethnic diversity of the city gave it the reputation of being a "city of tolerance". Several Croatian associations and two Croatian political parties were founded in Subotica. The minority celebrates numerous holidays according to its own tradition. For example, the Bunjevci Croats celebrate carnival before the beginning of Christian Lent with traditional pastries, among other things. In Subotica, the harvest festival is celebrated at the end of the harvest season, when handicrafts are made from straw and thanksgiving services are celebrated.

The Democratic Alliance of Croats in Vojvodina (Croatian: Demokratski savez Hrvata u Vojvodini DSHV) - is a political party of ethnic Croats in the Serbian province of Vojvodina, founded on 15 July 1990 in the city of Subotica to unite the interests of all Croats in Vojvodina through a common political organisation and to help shape the democratisation process of the then young parliamentary Republic of Serbia. The DSHV has been a member of the FUEN since 1993. Branches of the party were quickly formed in other municipalities and a party youth.

The Alliance has been a FUEN member since 1993.
